RAISE THE CULTURE IN YOUR WORKPLACE
During my time as an employee of Transdev Brisbane Ferries, it was my great privilege to be a part of our Trust Program. This was a peer support group whereby empowered individuals from different areas of our employees volunteered their time, energy, and compassion to be available for our fellow employees to assist them with areas of their life that were adversely affecting their mental and emotional health and impacting on the quality of their own and/or their loved one’s lives.
Any issues discussed with our Trustees were completely confidential and didn’t have to be work-related. The value of having fellow employees was very evident in the feeling of empathy based on shared workplace experiences and environments. This is something you just can’t achieve with a remote assistance program.
The Trust Program was very much instigated by Karen who had seen programs like this in previous industries and was close to her personal passion for the value of mental health and particularly its effects in the workplace. Karen was our Coordinator for the Trust Program and was very much our Trustee’s Trustee and was always happy to give us support when we were busy supporting others.

A person's mental health and well-being are very personal so any avenues of help need to be personal as well. Also, I am someone who, throughout my life, has been sort out for my opinion, advice, counselling, and a friendly listening ear. It's humbling to have this level of trust placed on you and I always respect it.
I feel having someone you can talk to within your own workplace or industry makes it much more personal and relatable. Obviously, any in-house personnel has to be selected very carefully to have the right combination of compassion, integrity, confidentiality, and trustworthiness.
Trust is an absolute must for it to work!! I also feel that people are more likely to use an in-house option than a remote person who can be perceived as distant and unrelatable.

I found my time as a Trustee both humbling and rewarding. Helping my workmates to find their way again when they were finding situations overwhelming and honouring their trust was such a privilege. I hope these peer support programs continue to be a part of our work environments as I can personally attest to their value.
I am very grateful that Karen chose me to be part of the Trust Program team and I would happily endorse her future contributions in this area of need.
Everyone needs a hand up at some time and it would be good to know it’s there.
